Tuli
Synopsis
As a girl in the lush forests of the Philippines provinces, Daisy reluctantly assisted her father in the traditional ritual of tuli, or circumcision, on the village boys. All of the boys, that is, except Nanding, an outcast who lives with his protective shamanic grandmother in the countryside. As a woman, Daisy lives with her drunken father and her complacent mother, selling bread to support the family. When her increasingly abusive father arranges a marriage to one of the earnest wealthy sons of the village, the strong-willed, rebellious Daisy vehemently resists by proposing marriage to her best friend Botchok, a mistreated beauty who has been abandoned by her fiancé. Together with the help of Nanding, they start to build a life outside the male-dominated society, but the superstitious villagers believe they have cursed the village with their forbidden love. Basking in magical golden sunlight, this atmospheric melodrama is primarily set across two years on Holy Week, dramatising the conflict between Filipino spiritual traditions and modern Christian rituals practised by indigenous people. Against this backdrop of religious amalgamation, Tuli considers feminist and queer possibilities within traditional Filipino culture.
